Lovely (forcefully so)food in a lovely setting. When we got there, we were the only other customers seated inside the restaurant. It was Cindy's birthday and I suggested the place because, as usual, I'd always wanted to try the food out, after hearing raving reviews from friends. For such a cute place, the service really didn't match up to it. We had a hard time getting attention from any of the servers there though they were mildly or reluctantly polite. One of them actually cleared our plates without asking, there was still food on it, we weren't done yet.
I was looking forward to the burger but it came quite a disappointment. The meat, though requested medium well, was well done and hard as a rock. It was warm, not hot. Because of that, I couldn't fully taste the seasonings. But there was that hint of a taste that could possibly close to perfect. The restaurant wasn't busy so I really couldn't understand why the food was so half-fucked.
Debbie's fish was the worst. Not fresh and the sauce tasted really bad, like dental wash. I am not kidding you. We had to change it halfway through. I couldn't allow her to go through that trash. The Wild Mushroom Risotto was superb, I'd been craving risotto all month and finally, something to whet my shriveling palates. The rest of the food wasn't bad. I would grace the place again, perhaps sometime closer to a weekend. Hopefully, the staff there would have been cured of deafness by then.

I don't remember the names of the dishes and the it was reasonably priced. The only downside about the whole experience was having to climb up the hill to reach the place, Old School.

Not my worst experience so far but disappointing nonetheless. Limited choices on the menu and meager-tasting dishes. Not worth the money. But yes give it to them, they've been opened for less than 6 months so I suppose there're lots of kinks to straighten out, especially taste wise.

SINGAPOREANS are losing the battle of the bulge, with one in 10 - or 10.8 per cent of the population - being obese.

This is up from 6.9 per cent in 2004, according to the latest National Health Survey.

The findings of the survey, which is conducted by the Health Promotion Board (HPB) every six years, were revealed yesterday at the launch of the annual National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign.

The growing rate of obesity can be blamed on two main factors - Singaporeans are not exercising enough, and they are not eating properly.

The bad news comes despite many efforts over the years to promote healthy living through exercise and proper diet.

While the obesity figure is not as high as in other developed countries, such as in the United States, where one in three people is obese, the HPB still sees cause for concern.

'This is a very worrying trend for us,' said HPB chief executive officer Lam Pin Woon yesterday.

Singapore's obesity trend - a 0.65 per cent increase a year - is similar to that seen in the US and Britain 30 years ago.

Obesity in these countries has become a major problem.

'We have to do something now. Otherwise, 30 years down the road, we'll be where the US and Britain are now,' Mr Lam said.

But it will be an uphill battle, judging from other findings of the survey.

Although more people are exercising, more than half of Singapore's population still do not exercise at all.

Six in 10 Singaporeans eat out, a trend which worries nutritionists. Home-cooked meals are deemed healthier as one can exercise control over the amount of salt and seasoning used.

'If you ask me: Am I happy? My answer is 'no', even though there is improvement,' said Mr Lam, referring to the number of Singaporeans who do not exercise. 'This is of special concern, given that we are now more sedentary in our lifestyles.'

The board is rolling out new programmes to fight the flab.

As evidence shows that chronic conditions, including obesity, have their origins when one is still in the mother's womb, the board wants to encourage expectant mothers to cultivate good eating habits.

Dr Annie Ling, director of the HPB's adult health division, said: 'There is some evidence to show that the rate of weight-gain of the foetus impacts the subsequent risk for developing obesity.'

Weight issues among the young in Singapore is a special area for concern, said general practitioner Alvin Tan, 30: 'Children who are obese tend to develop other health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes earlier in life.'

To encourage better eating habits among the young, the HPB will be introducing guidelines to protect children from the indiscriminate advertising and marketing of unhealthy food and beverage choices.

Yesterday's launch of the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign was held at VivoCity's amphitheatre, where the guest of honour, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, sweated it out to the Great Singapore Workout with a 1,000-strong crowd. Mr Goh shared with the audience his exercise regime, which includes playing tennis and going to the gym twice a week, and golf once a week.

VivoCity is also the first of 50 shopping centres to sign up as a Health Promoting Mall.

Such malls are encouraged to host activities which encourage a healthy lifestyle. For instance, the food courts and restaurants could provide healthier meal choices, and the pharmacies could provide counselling to help smokers kick the habit.

A single pattied version of the Fat Basterd which I assure you an acute coronary heart attack if you were to have it. I thought it didn't live up to the hype that I'd been hearing. It's a good burger no doubt, but it was not fantastic enough that I felt like I was in the high heavens while burying my face in it. I know a burger should be eaten as it is, letting your teeth sink through the layers and thick patty but I'm just too vain to let myself go like that. The only time when I allow myself to be myself with food is when I'm having a crab. Because excuse me, even Megan Fox won't look pretty still battling with a pincer. I'm forgiven. We went there on a Tuesday night and there were probably less than 5 tables occupied. I like the open concept and the various vendors and food choices available. I'd go back definitely.

Finally, I'm here! Been wanting to come here since forever although I've never heard of a single good review from friends. I suppose it's just the decor and theme of the restaurant which attracts me.

So anyway, I do have to commend the level of service there which is quite excellent. The servers were friendly and smiley. They were also very attentive to us even though there was a huge party going on in the restaurant at the same time. The food portions are quite family friendly.

Although I do have one complaint. This particular server kept offering us bread, probably 6 to 8 times throughout dinner and kept interrupting our conversation. Dude, if we want more bread, we'll give you the signal. Also, when the manager came to ask how we were enjoying the food, he took my bread plate away after talking to me and I had no place to put my bread thereafter. And it was only my plate he took. Why.

They had two choices of bread, ciabatta and onion bread. Both were palatable but I particularly loved the ciabatta rolls-- warm and fluffy. The butter serving was generous as well. I think we had 3 or 4 rounds of bread, I don't know where I found the space.

Starter: Brochette of Roasted Sea Scallops and Crispy Pork Belly $19
- served with wakame salad and a sesame soy dressing

We had little choice in choosing starters because CA is pregnant, no raw food, no seafood, no frog legs. The starter was savoury, however, the scallops were not done well enough, the middle was still raw and our dear preggers friend had to cut them off. The crispy pork belly was really crispy and it was delish! The skin was perfect in both taste and texture and the fat was so soft. I wish I could have another 10 of those.

Side: Mac and Cheese $9

The cheese wasn't too rich, it may have tasted quite bland but I'd say it was okay on the whole, not too salty nor overwhelming.

Pasta: Scallop Linguine $28
- pan seared scallops served with al dente linguine, tossed with garlic, chilli and fresh herbs

Very tasty. Pasta was done just right, although al dentle but with just the right amount of moisture and plumpness.

Main: Crispy Duck Leg Confit $29
- tender confit of duck leg served with Anna potato, braised red cabbage and thyme jus

Lovely, very savoury, although my duck leg wasn't crispy as promised. The meat was tender and well seasoned. The potato was too well done in whichever way it was suppose to be, sautéed or baked, to the point where it looked rather pathetic (dry and lifeless) and tasted just the same.

I wouldn't mind going back there to try their lunch menu and I heard brunch is pretty good.

The bread rolls were warm which was a nice welcoming touch, but the butter was unsalteed and thus useless as a spread. Requested for balsamic vinegar and olive oil. I wonder why they separate the two? Because usually, the balsamic vinegar is added into the olive oil and served as a dip as one.

Clay mentioned that it tasted like egg tart. It wasn't too salty and neither of the flavours were overpowering.

which Clay again mentioned, was not warm. I tried it and I do agree that, just like wine, goat cheese appreciation is an acquired taste. However, the taste reminds me of Afghan men and their bushy, unkempt beards. It tastes a bit like a whiff of body odour from very hairy, sweaty, men.

Pan Seared Bay Scallops with Crispy Chicken Mid Joints
with Roasted Edamame & Albufera Sauce
This was my starter, so I remember the name. When a dish mentions how the way your food would be cooked, I would expect the temperature of it to reflect just that. If you say, 'raw', I wouldn't expect it to sizzle, if you say 'sautéed', I wouldn't expect 'dry'. So when you say 'seared' and 'crispy', I would expect the food presented to me to be no less. The scallops were seared, yes, could've been longer but I don't want to be picky, but I'm particular about the temperature of my food. If it's been in a pan, I suppose it should taste warm and not feel like it's been left out in an open room for hours. And where were my 'crispy' chicken mid joints??? They came to me 'boiled' or 'stewed' probably! Temperature plays a big part in food, because it's one of the main elements that brings out the taste of the dish, if it's too cool, it loses its flavour, if it's too cold, it numbs the tongue and you can't taste it the way it's suppose to. I'm not an expert on food, but this is just common sense.

It tasted a little odd, not in a bad way but perhaps we were just not used to the flavours, although SN commented that, "the taste is overwhelming". I can't remember how it tasted, because it was just that forgettable.

Pasta - Pappardelle with Shredded Beef Cheek
I actually wanted to order that but Clay and T beat me to it. The pasta was done al dente which I don't really like but that's just personal. I feel like I'm mincing my words when I'm describing the food in this place. Okay , so, the dish tasted really cheap and the beef sort of stank. I hated it.

Crab Meat Fusilli
I wanted to order this as well but thank Heavens I didn't because it tasted quite horrendous. Cherie had told the server that she didn't want it to be spicy but it came really spicy anyway, and well, she can't take spicy so she was struggling the whole time. Poor thing. Even for SN who was usually alright with spicy food. I tasted it for myself, and the taste of it sort of explodes in your mouth, not in a good way, but in a damaging way because all you can taste or rather, sense, is the chilli gnawing at each of your taste buds, rendering them numb and thus handicapping them at fully tasting anything further. All you could taste was spice. Where were the flavours? Overpowered by spice!

I can't comment much on this because I didn't try it. All I remember was AH dousing the pasta with Tobasco because it was not as spicy as he requested.

Butter Poached Lobster Tail Fricassee
When the dish came, I wanted to cry, scream, shout and stamp my feet (all at once) at the horror before me. I swear I was about to go into a seizure. What is that??? I didn't order vegetable soup! It was bland and I felt that the vege didn't blend in very well with the whole taste of the dish. There was little harmony and it tasted almost vulgar. Thinking about it now, makes me want to cry all over again. Why did I put myself through it?

Dessert - or rather my birthday cake. The only redeeming factor of the whole evening although the texture of it was a bit too turdy. Loved the peanut butter layer in between. Everyone struggled to finish it because we were so filled with bread and paltry-tasting food. What a waste.

I love my friends, especially those working there, but I can never bring myself to go back there for a meal. I don't think I can ever sit through fine dining hell à la TUC again. I'm not exaggerating. I hated everything I tasted, except the cake. Just as how crappy the pictures are, the food is just as half fucked.

For some reason, my food pictures have been really awful. Almost as awful as the food that I've been having. But I still put them up here so you can know where are the places you shouldn't bother trying.

It was dinner with the family last Sunday at Zhou's Kitchen. It's pretty popular, seeing that it's got quite a few branches around town. Service was bad, they were obviously short-staffed but why should I care. I don't get a discount on service charges do I? Being ignored is one thing, but receiving fucked up attitudes is another. The cups and cutlery were dirty, with water stains and specks of I-don't-know-what on them. I told one of the servers to change the dirty cup and fill it with water, at the same time. Guess what. He came back with water, in the same filthy cup. No, I didn't throw a bitch fit. Never will I patronize that eatery again, that's for sure.

Food: passable. But another 2 years down the road with such standards, I think they should bid their accounts an early goodbye. Portions were small, but it's nice if it's for a small family or if you're the type who like to try as much as you can. I can name a handful of neighbourhood zhi char stalls that cook up better tasting dishes than most of them at this place and also cheaper at that. Well, we had more dishes than those shown in this entry, but I didn't take much because I was hungry. The red bean biscuit thing wasn't too bad though. It'd do as a nice lovely snack anytime.

It was some sort of a pasta fair at Coffee Club last week. Not too sure if it's still on, but let me tell you, don't even bother. The service was horrendous. My pasta was the first to come, between the three of us. Sent it back to the kitchen because I'd ordered penne and was served spaghetti. Never mind that, 10 minutes later, beef pesto penne came back but the other orders hadn't. We waited for another 2o minutes before all the orders were in and by that time, my pasta had turned cold. Horrible.

Taste was a fusion between east and west. You should skip it.

No one's going to believe me when I say I hate eating.

Been wanting to check this place out, yeah I know I have so many places I wanna check out. Wanted to come here for brunch but with Saturday, designated as clubbing nights for some people, it's almost impossible. So, dinner it was. It was packed, didn't manage to get a seat by the sea and settled for the saddest-looking part of the cafe. Only two servers waiting on almost 70 people, so please imagine my frustration. If you go out with me often enough, you would notice that servers tend to ignore my calls/waves/hellos/excuse mes. For whatever reason. Maybe I'm too tiny or I don't look like I can afford a glass of coke. So yeah, anyway, for once I ordered a burger and yes, no complaints! Burger is the safest food on the menu, people. I learnt that from T and so today I forbade him to order a burger which he now hates me for. The burger was alright, not really worth the price, but pretty good. The beef was nicely done. T had Chicken Cordon Bleu which he finished in 5 minutes just to let me know how upset he was and proceeded to tell me how I should eat a burger. I'm not at McDonald's and it's a $26 burger, so I used a fork and a knife, what is wrong with that, dear friends? Please enlighten.

Oh forgot to mention, the salad looked depressing. Great place to have a drink, more so if you love salty air and being surrounded by homes you couldn't afford in this lifetime.

I'm going to go on a hunt around the island for the best burger! Anyone interested?

I'm not sure if I'm stupid or something but I couldn't understand half of what was written on the menu? Well the food tasted blah blah bland. Nothing fancy, nothing to scream and shout about. Their specialty: eggs. They have chi-chi names for the types of eggs but somehow I ended up with a sunny side-up which would only cost about 25 cents (probably including gas and oil) if I'd cooked it at home. More a coffee place, really. Very small interior, rather inaccessible if you don't have a car. However, reasonably priced for an eatery at the tip of town.

Don't even bother.

Completely disappointing.

I think I've had enough of this little bistro. Sometimes, it's not good to patronise the same restaurant twice. It's not that I had a bad experience before or anything. I just forgot they had a pathetic menu, inattentive staff (clueless too). I made a special order for risotto from the chef, it wasn't on their menu and I had a craving for some risotto then. The base was tomato and it had a generous serving of tiger prawns and some sausage which taste nearly sent me gagging. There I was thinking that it'd be a good night since I was such a seafood lover, but just a bite of a prawn almost got me reeling over on the ground. Okay, I know, dramatic. But it was such a disappointment, enraging even. The prawns were fucking stale. I could smell the sea from them, was it the Atlantic or the South China? I don't care how many you give me, quality maintenance hello! Oh well, anyway, T's burger was awesome as usual. Smart choice, how can you ever go wrong with burgers.

Horrible horrible service at this one. Disappointed isn't the word, more like disgusted, yeah, along those lines. No one greeted us at the entrance, the servers were busy with I-don't-know what. It was 5ish when we got there so I really don't see why they're busy. One of the servers sort of threw the menu down onto my table. He didn't apologise so I don't know if it was on purpose or not. They left us alone after that, so we didn't have to deal with the bad service for a bit. I ordered Smoked ham with portobello mushrooms in tomato crepe. I liked the crepe a lot, it was really savory and it had tomato dip to go along. The filling wasn't exciting, wanted beef actually but it didn't come with mushrooms and I had a craving for them that day. It was pretty heavy for the stomach, well okay, my stomach ain't that huge and my eating habits aren't exactly normal so usually, a few bites for me and I'm good to go. Plus, I wasn't hungry when I had that, I just had to have something before class started.

T had the smoked beef, or cut sirloin if I'm not wrong. The beef was done in a way that he liked so it was alright, not too chewy or tough. The crepes were mediocre to say the most and not very worth the amount we paid for. And not forgetting the service was horrendous! I saw one of the staff sneezing into his palm and going back to the kitchen. I sure hope he washed his hands. Not the best choice of restaurant spots. The escalator ran up from where we sat and a look up and you could see...well let's just say, the interior designer wasn't thinking. I won't be returning.

Nandos! Finally here in Singapore! Mad crazy about this place. Whenever I travel to Malaysia, I must have this! So just a day after I read about Nandos reaching the shores of the island, I couldn't stop the cravings and decided to head down there with N since we had business in the area that day. There wasn't a queue, surprisingly but what the hell, it was only 5 in the evening. We sat indoors, which was sadly, a dick move on my side. I didn't realise that it was an open kitchen inside the restaurant. What clever design! The air smelt like grease and we both ended up smelling like the kitchen after our meal.

Well anyways, I knew it was a bad omen from the moment we had to wait for like 10 minutes at the entrance for someone to seat us. There wasn't a queue but I find it hard to believe that no one managed to notice us, the restaurant wasn't even that filled. Moving on, for starters, we had Peri Wedges and Creamy Peri Dip which was basically normal wedges with sour and spiced mayonnaise. I wasn't expecting something fantastical, wedges are as wedges are no matter how fancy their names are.

N had Beef Prego Roll with fries. It's really funny she ordered beef considering that chicken was their specialty. It was rather disappointing. Sometimes, I think you can gauge how your food would taste just based on its presentation alone, but of course, there's also the 'don't judge taste by its looks' school of thought. I think even McD presents their food more pleasantly than Nandos' did. The beef was a lil too chewy for me but the fries were quite good, reminded me of Swensen's famous fries. Nothing magical.

I ordered Chicken Kebab with Mediterranean Rice and Lime Skewered Potatoes. Sounds exotic but very very sadly, the chicken was quite tasteless. The rice was good, the flavours weren't strong and overpowering, the potatoes were rather hard for my liking, not that they weren't thoroughly cooked or anything. Thank God the Peri-Peri sauces were made in some factory and packed there, so the standard was maintained. I love love love the Garlic Peri-Peri sauce which was much hotter than the Extra Hot Peri-Peri sauce! (Garlic always gets me one way or another, it's a love-hate relationship. Think awesome taste vs pungent breath.)

The Malaysian branch is much much better! Well, it could be the fact that the place had just opened up just 2 days before we went there. I hope they get the tastes and standards right the next time I decide to dine there again. I love Nandos, but it's a bit silly for me to travel all the way up north just to grab a bite of theirs. I also have to add, that it costs twice as much here than in Malaysia. I know I know, can't be helped.

Had tea with N a couple of weeks back at TWG. (I know, everything's overdue and I'm just going to off load all the updates at one go.) Love the interior although the place was somewhat in the middle of nowhere in Ion. Ir was a bit of a squeeze as the tables were set pretty close to each other (what's new, space is always scarce here in this part of the world), but still che che and delicate nonetheless. I noticed the diners were 90% female. Is it only women who know how to appreciate a good cup of tea? We had some pastries and cakes to go along but I can't quite remember what, I don't know why but I have to admit, I've been rather lazy recently to snap a picture of the pretty things I see. I had the yummiest strawberry tea there, and N had passion fruit tea. The price was reasonable and you do need to take note that it's one tea pot to a customer and you're not allowed to share teas. The servers were all pinoys by the way, and with the new decor (alright, not new, but somewhat different), it felt like we were in a foreign land. Don't worry, as always, they provide really good service. Anyone up for a good cuppa tea?

Once again, I apologise for the shitty pictures. Shaky hands and dim lighting just don't go too well together. Had a nice dinner with the family last Saturday at District 10, some place I've been wanting to go to for the longest time. I love the layout of the place. It's so relaxing and tastefully designed. The food is so-so though. The Tomato and Basil Bruschetta which T had as a main was painfully pathetic. Only 3 slices at $8! He's had better too. There was the prawn risotto which I quite liked. I wouldn't mind that the next time I go there which I'm guessing I would since I was given return dining vouchers as part of a credit card promotion. It wasn't overly salty which most risottos always tend to be. Big fat tiger prawns, hearts. Sissy had the Spaghetti Carbonara which she commented was alright. Didn't try it so I can't veto. We had 3 steaks at the table, mine was suppose to be medium well. If you don't know me well enough, I'm particularly annal about how my steak is done. If it's medium well, it has to be so or I'll send it back. However, mine came well done! I wanted to change it but was shushed by sissy not to be so picky and I was hungry so I just ate. It wasn't tough, surprisingly, it was tender and still juicy. Not the best I've had of course and the chips were too dry. Loved the pizza! Especially the parma ham on it, too much and it'd probably choke your palate with the excessive amount of sodium. I must say that the service was really unfortunately bad. The servers were inattentive and I had to ask for mustard twice because the other server forgot. It wasn't a really busy night, there were still empty tables. Our water took a long time to come too. What's more, they actually left a pail of dirty water on one of our seats when half the table was already taken. Hmmm... I might give those vouchers away now that I'm recalling all of these. The price is quite reasonable though and I like how it's just on the outskirts of town. Anyway, that's me, sissy and my feisty little niece in the picture.

Everything with Fries

This is fast becoming a foodie blog which I assure you, isn't. It just so happens that recently, I've gotten tired of taking pictures of my friends and waiting for the right moments to take a snap. I'd rather be enjoying the moments with them than remembering them. So I've been more interested in taking pictures of the food that I eat because they won't ask me not to tag them if they didn't look appealing.

So anyways, went down to this new cafe at Holland Village yesterday called, Everything with Fries. The design and layout of the cafe is what you would call attractive, its stark white walls really makes the little space stand out among the clutter of eateries there. We tried the egg soup which was just Campbell chicken soup with a deep fried egg in the middle. The egg was good though, I mean, has eggs ever tasted bad? You don't need a michelin star chef to fry a good egg. We tried the skinny wings too which was very salty but I think it'd have gone really well with beer. It was funny how our starters got served only after our mains.

S ordered Salmon in a Cup. Whatever the hell that meant. We were all wondering what it was, a la corn in a cup? And then it came and we all went 'Oh'. It was soup with chunky salmon bits in it. And C said it tasted quite similar to vomit. The fries, supposedly original was anything but original, tasted like it'd been seasoned with paprika or something.

My Cheeseburger came next. I was not wowed. The presentation of the dish didn't click with me. It was sloppy and didn't look appealing at all. They got almost all our orders wrong. Mine was suppose to come with the pathetic caesar salad which had only 4 pieces of lettuce in S's, look at the picture up there, but it came with coleslaw instead. T had only 3 pieces in his salad. Very sad. The food was pathetically depressing and it wasn't worth the amount we paid. I think they should start making dips since their flavoured fries weren't really flavoured at all. Like they say, packaging isn't everything. Junk food joint, McDonald's, is much better. Sad but true.

Even though they almost killed me, I love them still.

It's the first Restaurant Week here in SG! Well, it ends tomorrow actually. Had made reservations for District 10 at first because all the other restaurants I wanted to try out were fully booked. But thank Heavens, Forlino opened more slots. I'd been hearing raves about this place and so was looking forward to this. Disclaimer: sorry for the substandard pictures, wasn't really in a picture mood.

First off, the place is gorgeous. I had to walk up 2 flights of steps though. If you're a girl, you should know that this is quite a bit of a turn off especially when you're in sky-high heels. The interior was a little small, I'd thought it'd have been bigger. The view was not bad. We were seated next to the kitchen door I think, or some other door and beside the main serving table. I didn't really like that because I could hear the manager giving out orders to his wait staff and sometimes overhearing what the staff talked about. Very distracting.

So the menu was presented to us, not much of a menu because it was set and we had between 2 mains to choose from. Well, you can't ask for much since it's RW. I had the Braised Wagyu Beef and T had the Halibut.

Complimentary salmon with herb and cauliflower mousse was first served. Didn't take a picture, couldn't be bothered because the presentation was quite pitiful. But it was a nice gesture. It was the first time I had cauliflower mousse, it tasted a bit like garlic spread and that was how I ate it, I spread it onto the bread which by the way was lovely.

Next, it was Crab Salad with Wild Rucola, Sweet Pea Leaves and Cantaloupe. The server said it had some mango and raspberry in it, that's all I can remember actually. Not the best, I have to say but it was refreshing and the meat was juicy. I don't like mangoes and I don't like mint even though the mint was really subtle (reminds me of Vietnamese food which I have a great disdain for). Would I try that again? Nah, don't think so.

The pasta which came next was a bit al dente and with bits of lobster. Sorry, don't remember the name. The flavours weren't overpowering and I didn't feel like I had to drink lots of water to neutralise my palate which I usually do when I take pasta everywhere else. Then there was the subtle taste of MINT again (hates)! But I do like this dish despite that and I wouldn't mind having it again.

By this time I was already quite full, I'm not much of a big eater, a slice of bread is able to stave off my hunger for a couple of hours but I was looking forward to the Wagyu Beef Cheek Braised with Marsala Wine and Herb Mashed Potatoes, so I sucked it all in! So it came, looking a bit blacker than I'd thought it'd be and on top of some mashed potato. The meat was awesomely tender yet it did not break into stringy pieces. The sauce atop the beef was too salty. I had to keep sipping my water to keep my sodium level at a normal. But it did taste less salty when eaten with the potatoes. Disappointed to say the least. T had the Halibut Filet with Orange, Green Asparagus and Martini Vermouth Sauce which he didn't really enjoy because he doesn't really like fish. He said the halibut was tasteless. I tried it and I quite like it actually, the skin was nicely grilled?/cooked and the fish was nicely done too. Wouldn't try the beef again but wouldn't mind the halibut.

For dessert, we had Molten Lava Chocolate Cake with Banana Gelato and Rum Sauce. Oh, wow me already, what a common dessert, really. It was extremely sweet and the cake tasted like it was made from instant mix! The banana ice cream tasted funky, not much of a fruity person I am but it was okay.

On the whole, I was quite disappointed in the food, it wasn't fantastic, it didn't make me swoon. However, the wait staff were very attentive and their service was impeccable. The timing between each course was a bit rushed though. Would I visit again? Yes, I guess, but it won't be soon. And please, no mint for me.

The decision to destroy my carefully built-up virtual image came as a result of wanting to enhance my profile.

In march, at the peak of Facebook popularity, I quit. with four swift clicks of the mouse, I canceled my account. Gone was the entire online persona I had created for myself – profile pictures, interests and activities, work history, friends acquired – all carefully thought out to showcase to the world the very best version of me, all now deleted.

Ironically, the decision to destroy my carefully built-up virtual image came as a result of wanting to enhance my profile. All that particular week I’d been hungry for new quotes on my page, something to reflect the week I’d been having: something introspective. I perused a quotes website and found this one attributed to Aristotle:

“We are what we repeatedly do.”

I became despondent. What, then, was I? If my time was spent changing my profile picture on Facebook, thinking of a clever status update for Facebook, checking my profile again to see if anyone had commented on my page, Is this what I am? A person who re-visits her own thoughts and images for hours each day? And so what do I amount to? An egotist? A voyeur?

Whatever the label, I was unhappy and feeling empty. The amount of time I spent on Facebook had pushed me into an existential crisis. It wasn’t the time-wasting, per se, that bothered me. It was the nature of the obsession – namely self-obsession. Enough was enough. I left Facebook.

In the past, my feelings toward Facebook and similar social networking sites had swung between a genuine sense of connection and community to the uncomfortable awareness that what all of our blogs, online journals and personal profiles really amounted to was serious narcissism. As my feelings of over-exposure continued to mount, the obvious solution would have been to set limits on my Facebook time – yet I still found myself sucked in for longer periods every time I visited. In part, it was the hundreds of little links to and hints about other people’s lives that kept me coming back. But even more addicting were the never-ending possibilities to introduce, enhance and reveal more of myself.

The baby-boomers were at one time thought to be the most self-absorbed generation in American history and carried the label of the Me Generation. In recent years this title has been appropriated, twisted and reassigned to the babies of those same boomers – born in the 80s and 90s – now called Generation Me or the Look at Me Generation. Author Jean Twenge, an Associate Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University and herself a member of Generation Me – spent ten years doing research on this group’s sense of entitlement and self-absorption. She attributed it to the radical individualism that was engendered by baby-boomer parents and educators focused on instilling self-esteem in children beginning in the 1970s. American and Canadian youth were raised on aphorisms such as “express yourself” and “just be yourself.”

To further illustrate her point, Twenge also found a large increase in self-reference words like “I,” “me,” “mine” and “myself” in news stories published in the 80s and 90s. These words replaced collective words such as “we,” “us,” “humanity,” “country” or “crowd” found in the stories of a similar nature in the 50s and 60s. This generation might be the least thoughtful, community-oriented and conscientious one in North American history.

In the end, what does all this online, arms-length self-promotion ultimately provide? Perhaps it’s merely one component of the pursuit to alleviate some of the blackness encountered in the existential vacuum of modern life. As Schopenhauer once projected, modern humans may be doomed to eternally vacillate between distress and boredom. For the vast majority of people experiencing the fragmented, fast-paced modern world of 2008, a Sunday pause at the end of a hectic week may cause them to become all too aware of the lack of content in their lives. So we update our online profiles and tell ourselves that we are reaching out.

And yet, the time we waste on Facebook only makes our search for comfort and community more elusive. Online networking sites are marketed as facilitators of community-orientation but when I think about the millions of people – myself included – who spend large portions of their waking lives feeding off an exchange of thousands of computerized, fragmented images, it doesn’t add up to community-engagement. These images have no meaning beyond “I look pretty from this angle” or “I’m wasted” or “look who my new boyfriend is.” And as we continue to chase even harder – accessing Facebook at work, uploading images from our cell phones – we spend our money on constantly upgraded electronic gadgets marketed to our tendency to self-obsess and present particularly uninteresting and repetitive images of ourselves. There’s got to be more than this.

And so I quit…

After I left Facebook, I wondered what all my friends, family and acquaintances were going to think when they noticed I’d disappeared off the Facebook earth. So some of my Facebook narcissism – am I being noticed, am I being missed – remains. But I’m also asking myself some new questions. How do I find balance between my online life and my “real” life? How much exposure is healthy? How do I act responsibly for myself and engage with those I love? These are still “me” thoughts but they feel different than before. As I sit here, keyboard under palm, eyes on screen, I try to remind myself that my hands and eyes need to venture out into the community and look and touch the truly tangible that lies just beyond that other big screen: my window. I have deactivated my Facebook account. I have come to a point where I am sick and tired of going to the page to find out how my friends are doing. I don't like stalking people and I don't like being stalked either. I'm traditional when it comes to social relationships. I'd prefer to catch up with a friend over a cup of coffee or over the phone. If my friends are genuinely interested in my life and its events, they could call me up. It's a bit scary when you go out with a bunch of friends you haven't seen in a long long while and they start asking you about the places you've been, the things you've done, the friends you've been hanging out with. All of which, you've never mentioned to them before. Just short of media coverage on glossies and TV, and you could call each of us a celebrity. Your life becomes so transparent, like a book laid opened for just about anyone to read. Do you really bask in that?

That isn't the type of attention I appreciate.

Whenever a picture is being taken, my friends go, "Post it on Facebook and tag me!" or "You better not tag me!" (guilty, say 'I') Why can't a picture be taken for the sole purpose of a keepsake? Why do I need to share it with people that don't really matter anyway? Don't tell me I can limit the amount of information shown because frankly, what is the point? We chose to have an identity on the Internet yet we are afraid of being judged. It's like celebrities caught having affairs, people judge and talk, if you like privacy, change.

And sometimes after a night out, I find myself editing all the pictures taken, on the next day. Then it would occur to me, "Why the hell am I doing this?" Facebook has made everyone such a showoff, it's made everyone so insecure about themselves that they have to resort to photoshop to look better (me included). And sometimes, there's that 'competition' too. Like who takes nicer pictures, who's got a better camera, who's got prettier friends, who's got nicer clothes and who's been to more amazing restaurants and places. I'm sick of all that. Really. What has Facebook made me? Vindictive and 'stalkerish' to say the least. In the real world, you could call me paparazzi.

This is not the way I'd like to document my life. I don't want to remember being so committed to updating my friends about life on a lifeless social tool at this age. I'm not saying it's wrong and I'm not condemning any of you, users. To each his own.

I, however, find it meaningless. Already. It's wearing off on me.But then again I might succumb to boredom, sell-out on my convictions and reactivate it in a week or two.

But so far, I'm enjoying the lack of the addiction to the site. I find myself spending more time with a book than reading my friends' statues.
